The gilt, silver and bronze participation medals were presented in three different types of boxes (red, blue, green), which indicated rank of official or class of recipient - official or athlete.

Participation medals were made with the same design as London 1908 and Stockholm 1912 on the front. Three different finishes were created: gilt bronze, silver and bronze. Gilt and silvered medals were given to dignitaries and officials and bronze medals given to athletes and National Olympic Committee members.
