Greg Louganis struck his head on the springboard in his penultimate dive in Seoul and still won gold. He repeated his winning performance in platform, claiming his fourth career gold medal later in the Games.

The Seoul Olympic emblem on the reverse of the medal is composed of the Seoul Olympic sash with the three Taeguk patterns from the Korean national flag and the five Olympic rings.
